Germany announces 8 million euro assistance package for Nepal following Bhotekoshi floods

KATHMANDU: Germany has announced 8 million euro assistance package for Nepal following the recent Bhotekoshi floods.

The support will address immediate humanitarian needs alongside the longer-term implications of the disaster, channelled through European Union (EU) and multilateral mechanisms.

The largest portion of the package, comprising EUR 7.35 million in development cooperation, is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). Building on a long-standing partnership with the Government of Nepal, GIZ will focus on maintaining access to essential health services, energy, water supply, and climate- and disaster-resilient infrastructure.

For immediate relief, Germany is allocating over EUR 500,000 in emergency assistance delivered through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism at the request of the Government of Nepal. The supplies, including kitchen sets, tarpaulins, mosquito nets, drinking-water equipment, and camp beds, are provided by the German Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW), the German Life Saving Association (DLRG), and the German Federal State of Thuringia.

A further EUR 200,000 in direct humanitarian assistance is pledged to two civil society organisations. One project concentrates on the health and well-being of pregnant women, new mothers, and newborns. The second project forms part of the response through the Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO) to create income opportunities, assist infrastructure recovery, and improve conditions in displacement camps.

The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Kathmandu issued a press statement noting the ongoing partnership between both nations.

"Our thoughts are with the victims of this disaster and their families. Germany stands with the people of Nepal in this difficult time. Our support reflects the deep partnership between our two countries and our shared commitment to protecting human life and dignity in the face of natural disasters," the Embassy added.
